Building International Networks: Cultural Competency and International Business Etiquette

We all know that globalization is the new (or not so new) business mantra. In the last 18 months this statement has been supported by an unprecedented number of Trans-Atlantic-US law firm mergers and strong investment/re-investment by US firms in Australasia. Inward investment, into the US, by European and Chinese law firms has also been gaining ground. Research suggests that most US firms with 20 or more attorneys are working with multi-national clients on a regular basis. International secondments in US firms, both to and from their international offices, are on the rise. Understanding international business and differences in cultural and work practices has become a critical skill for every successful lawyer. Our Senior Adjunct Consultant, Terri Mottershead, has developed and is currently offering a wonderful program tailored to attorneys and law firms that focuses on the development of this skill set.

In developing and delivering this program, Terri draws on her more than 27 years of experience in international law practice, legal institution building and legal education in over 20 countries and five different continents. Terri has put together a highly interactive program, offered in a 90 minute format, which uses numerous real life examples and mini case studies to discuss the subject matter. Participants are also encouraged to take a quiz to determine their cultural competency, challenged to identify implicit bias, supported and guided in the importance of acknowledging bias and tolerating (or celebrating) differences.

Topics covered in the program include:

  • What is meant by cultural competency
  • Why cultural competency matters
  • How cultural competency is being incorporated into competency based development models and is consequently impacting performance management, performance assessment and promotion
  • How you know if you are culturally competent
  • How an absence of cultural competency can make or break business relationships
  • What to do and not to do at meetings involving international business colleagues and clients

This program has been receiving rave reviews from coast to coast and internationally. It has also drawn very favorable press coverage.
