Nancy Saltsman Carver
Ms. Carver has more than twenty years of experience in the areas of legal career counseling, law school and attorney recruitment, and law school administration. She is an expert in assisting attorneys in the career decision-making process. She has extensive knowledge of the legal marketplace. Ms. Carver specializes in providing career counseling for recent law school graduates.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
Ms. Carver was associated with a top tier law school for over sixteen years where she spent thirteen years as the Director of Career Development. She managed an office of ten serving more than 1,600 law students and alumni and provided counsel on all aspects of the job search and career decision-making process including instructing clients on job search tools such as resume writing, cover letters, and interview preparation. She directed law school recruitment programs that included a range of legal employers, including large and small law firms, government agencies, public interest employers, and organizations that employ attorneys and law students in alternative legal careers. Ms. Carver has also developed and presented programs, forums, and workshops on law career related topics and professional development.
Specific expertise includes the following:
- Counseling attorneys on the full range of legal career options and helping them develop job search strategies.
- Assisting individuals making career transitions through the exploration of careers in traditional legal settings as well as alternative options.
- Administering and interpreting the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a personality type indicator, and the Strong Interest Inventory, a career assessment tool, individually and for groups.
- Working closely with legal employers to understand their employment practices and recruiting priorities.
- Developing informational programs on the legal marketplace, recruiting trends, and effective recruitment techniques.
- Coaching individuals to develop the skills they need to become successful in their professional careers.
BUSINESS/ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE
As the Director of Career Development at The George Washington University Law School, Ms. Carver planned procedures, determined policies, and oversaw all activities and services provided by the office.
Her office provided career planning and related services to the 1,600 JD and post-JD students, and numerous alumni of the Law School, establishing and maintaining relationships with employers, prospective employers and alumni of the Law School, developed new programs and expanding/revising existing services to meet the changing needs of the student and alumni population, and responded to Law School deans, faculty, staff, students and alumni with requests for statistics, legal career related information and material, presentations, and articles.
